SPCA thanks community for support

The Highveld Ridge SPCA held their final open day for the year on 3 December 2016.

SECUNDA – Highveld Ridge SPCA held its final Christmas themed open day on Saturday, 3 December.

Many local residents spent the day with the staff and animals and donated food and necessities.

They had the opportunity to take some of the dogs for walks, cuddle the cats and kittens and learn more about the goats, sheep, pigs, horses and the donkey.

According to Ms Jenneth Geel, senior inspector, these open days are the perfect opportunity for the community to come to the SPCA and to learn more about the work they do.

“Many people think we just take away cats and dogs, but this is not the case.

“We do community outreaches, we have educational programmes and we inspect every place where animals are kept for gain, from pet shops and small holdings to sale yards and abattoirs.

“If there is a cow or sheep in distress next to the road, we get called and if there is a cat trapped somewhere or a wild animal that has been injured, we try to be there.

“That is why I want to thank the community as the festive season comes closer.

“Without their continued support this year, our doors would not have remained open.

“Their support has directly helped the animals and we as the SPCA can not even begin to express our gratitude.”

The staff and volunteers from the SPCA also treated visitors to Christmas carols.
