Seniors plan remembrance parade

Secunda Senior Citizen’s Club elected a new management committee.

SECUNDA – The Secunda Senior Citizen’s club held their annual general meeting on Wednesday, 19 October.

The club elected a new committee and according to Ms Pam Kotze, re-elected chairman, members of the club and the committee also passed an important resolution.

“We have decided on a number of worthy causes that could possibly benefit members concerning receiving whatever money remains should the club disband.

“By passing this resolution, we have ensured that the money raised by members does not one day end up in the wrong hands.”

The club regularly raises money for local charitable organisations and takes their roll as a worthy member of the community seriously.

“As a club we decided early on to give and do as much as we can back to the community and we always joke and say we give rather than receive.”

Regardless of this mindset, Ms Kotze made use of the opportunity to thank businesses and the community who routinely offer their support to the club.

Ms Kotze discussed the upcoming events that include a remembrance parade on 8 November, Christmas Carols on 23 November and a Christmas lunch on 30 November.

The remembrance parade is open to anyone who is interested.

“Though it coincides with the international Month of Remembrance and is often linked to military veterans, the parade of 8 November is open to anyone who has lost someone.

“If you feel the need to take a moment and participate in this parade, feel free to join in and come and lay a wreath.”

For more information about the parade, contact Ms Kotze at 082 466 5757.

Local Moths are also hosting a military remembrance parade on Saturday, 12 November.

According to Mr Brian Wickens, this parade is focused more on military veterans and acting or ex-service men and women.

“On 11 November there is a parade in Greylingstad and then we have a parade in Secunda on 12 November, all in honour of the armistice and the month of remembrance.

“Although 11 November was initially linked to the first world war, the date as well as the whole month of November is now important to all war veterans and acting service-personnel.”
