Water restrictions implemented due to drought

Recent water restrictions will attempt to prevent severe water shortages in the near future.

HIGHVELD – In a statement released by Mr Bheki Kubheka, acting head of Communications and Marketing of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, on Wednesday, 21 September it is indicated that they are introducing water restrictions to reduce water consumption in response to the current drought.

This comes after various municipalities in South Africa have been forced to implement similar water restrictions due to the greatly reduced rainfall of the past season.

The statement indicates that the water restrictions will roll out in phases.

“The first phase will be reduction of water pressure in all areas and high water users are requested to reduce their consumption by 10 per cent.

“The restrictions will be applied until the 15 per cent water reduction is realised by the municipality.”

The statement goes on to explain why these restrictions are being implemented this early.

“South Africa is a water scarce country and all citizens are required to be prudent in managing this resource.

“The drought is affecting our supply from Rand Water and it is therefore critical that water conservation measures be implemented.

“At this stage, we are also compelled to 15 per cent water reduction as per the Government Gazette-Department of Water and Sanitation.”

In an attempt to highlight the urgency of the situation, the municipality confirmed that there will be no alternative water supply during the water restrictions.

Local residents and business owners are urged to adhere to these restrictions and act according to them.

“Industries that can use recycled water are encouraged to contact the municipality on options that might be available.

“The municipality would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

The Department of Water and Sanitation issued a Gazette on 12 August to limit the urban water use by 15 per cent and irrigation use by 20 per cent.

Based on the geography of the area served by Rand Water and according to their website, the restriction applicable to Rand Water and its supply areas is for a 15 per cent curtailment on urban use.

Although these restrictions are being implemented now, they are mainly focused on preventing a severe water crisis in the near future.

According to the Drought SA website and the Water Research Commission, there are different ways in which you can reduce your water usage:

– Install water-saving shower-heads and try to limit your showers to five minutes.

– Wait until your dishwasher and washing machine are full before you switch them on and use the “Eco” setting if possible.

– Do not leave the water running while you brush your teeth, shave or wash dishes.

– If you have to water your garden, do so only early in the morning or late at night.

– Do not throw away used ice-cubes, but rather place them in houseplants instead of watering them.

– Wash your pets over grass that is in need of watering.

– Thaw food in the fridge or microwave instead of under running water.

– Install a duel-flush toilet.
