Teenagers drown at abandoned mine

Two teenage boys drowned in a dam at the abandoned Imbabala mine on Saturday.

Two teenage boys, aged 14 and 16 drowned in a dam at the abandoned Imbabala mine on the western outskirts of Ermelo on Saturday afternoon. The names of the deceased have not yet been officially released.

Police spokesperson for Ermelo, Capt Carla Prinsloo said details were unclear at this stage but it appears that the boys went missing on Saturday afternoon.

A search for the youngsters led to the discovery of their shoes clothing on the embankment of a deep water-filled excavation at the mine on Sunday.

Police divers were called in from White River on Sunday afternoon and the bodies were recovered shortly before 16:00.
