Municipal employees face criminal charges

They made their second court appearance on 2 September and the case was postponed to 23 October

Mr Linda Tshabalala, Lekwa municipal manager, has recently laid charges against seven municipal employees.

Mr Bheki Khumalo, Ms Nompumelelo Zimu, Ms Thabsile Manqele, Mr Zakhele Khoza, Mr Dennis Moloi, Mr Samuel Ndaba and Ms Deli Galela are facing charges of intimidation, malicious damage to property and contempt of court.

They made their second court appearance on 2 September and the case was postponed to 23 October.

Apparently the charges are as a result of incidents that allegedly occurred earlier this year.

Lekwa municipal workers embarked on a strike and submitted a memorandum with a list of demands on 10 February.

The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) members vowed to continue protesting until their demands were met.

Mr Tshabalala was apparently granted special leave during the strike, while the issues listed on the memorandum were being investigated.
