New mayor elected for Standerton

‘The marriage between the ANC and the community is not a permanent one, it is performance-driven so if we fail to deliver, divorce will be imminent’

Mr Linda Dhlamini was elected unopposed as the mayor of the Lekwa Municipality during a special council meeting on 18 August.

Members of the public filled the council chamber to witness this event, while members of different political parties celebrated in song outside the municipal building.

A total of 28 councillors were sworn in on the day.

The ANC dropped from 23 seats to 20 seats and the DA’s total decreased from six to five seats.

The Civic Voice obtained three seats and the EFF received two seats.

However, only one EFF councillor was sworn in because the other EFF member withdrew.

The new kid on the block the Civic Voice made their presence felt during the proceedings.

Mr Nicholas Selepe, Civic Voice member, gave the public a glimpse of what council meetings will be like in the next five years.

He did not hold back, but voiced his concerns during the meeting which amused members of the public, but annoyed some of the councillors.
