Eskom empowers emerging contractors

In the period of 2010 to 2012, more than 430 contractors were afforded an opportunity for business that completed their training through the academy with a value of R1.2 billion.

The power utility company has established the Eskom Contractor Academy as part of its development programme to support skills development to enhance job creation and contribute to alleviation of poverty.

The Contractor Academy was first piloted in 2008 and has grown significantly, to date almost 1000 contractors have been successfully trained.

More than 518 contractors from the nine provinces have been trained with the youth accounting for approximately 60 percent.

The academy trains emerging contractors and suppliers on fundamental business skills in support of government’s initiative to create jobs and develop skills.

Training is provided on finance, project management, safety and people management.

More than 300 new permanent jobs and 242 temporal positions were created. In addition, R269 million was invested in assets such as vehicles, trucks and R4 million in buildings, offices and workshops.
