Mother seek help for her disabled child

“It is easier to blame someone if you have never had a disabled child.”

KINROSS – Ms Elizabeth Mokoena’s eight-year-old disabled daughter needs the community’s help.

Puleng was a pupil at Osizweni Special School and was doing well, but she used to soil herself in the bus and pupils who are not physically challenged, will get off the bus saying it smells bad.

“Then the bus driver refused to transport my child,” said the unemployed mother of three children of who Puleng is the oldest.

Another challenge is that when Ms Mokoena sometimes gets a one-day job in Thistle Grove, she finds that there is no one home when she returns.

She said she desperately needs a job, but her main concern is her daughter.

A big concern is Puleng’s safety.

The family lives in a one-room shack and though they have tried to put up a fence, Puleng always finds her way out and neighbours blame her mother for not taking care of her.

“It is easy to blame someone if you have never had a disabled child,” said a frustrated Ms Mokoena.

Ms Mokoena is looking for a school with boarding facilities for Puleng and will use Puleng’s grant to cover the cost.

Puleng’s father is also unemployed and the parents currently take turns to look for work, because one of them has to care for Puleng while the other one is out.

The father often feels helpless, because Puleng’s needs are increasing.

She currently needs things like Pampers and medical care.

The family said social workers are helping them, but they can not find a school with boarding facilities.
