GS College students still want answers

According to a SRC member, they have decided to continue attending classes, while waiting for a response from management

Gert Sibande College students are still waiting for a response from the college management.

They took to the streets on 6 May, protesting about funding and classes were disrupted and the angry students demanded answers.

They want the college to give each student more than R3 000 for accommodation or transport from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

According to them, NSFAS has increased the funding to colleges and as a result they expect to receive more funds this year.

They said NSFAS pays for the tuition and each student receives R3 000 for accommodation or transport after tuition fees have been paid.

The students also claimed that some of them did not receive the money last year.

They also wanted the college to accommodate students, who are not from Standerton or Sakhile, at Umnandi Catering and Accommodation.

According to them, the college rents this accommodation to contract workers.

Members of the Student Representative Council (SRC) met with the college management, but could not confirm if the students will receive more than R3 000 this year.

Students were still unhappy after the meeting.

According to a SRC member, they have decided to continue attending classes, while waiting for a response from management.
