Man sentenced to seven years for house-breaking

Monareng committed house-breakings during the day.

EVANDER – Andrew Monareng was sentenced in the Evander Magistrate’s Court to seven years in prison for house-breaking in Secunda and Evander.

When he was arrested, he was in possession of house-breaking equipment and fingerprints linked him to other reported house robberies.

Det Sgt July Mahlangu from Evander Police Station was investigating the house-breaking cases and said Monareng was operating alone.

Monareng is said to have also broke into the houses of a police officer and a prosecutor, during the day.

He stole electrical appliances and clothes and some of the stolen items are recovered.

Monareng was originally from Bushbuckridge, but was staying in eMbalenhle.

His photo was published in the Ridge Times after his escape from Bethal Prison on 4 January 2014 and was rearrested in Daveyton, Ethwathwa.

Sgt Sibusiso Mbuli said Evander Police Station congratulates Det Sgt July Mahlangu for his thorough investigation which led to the sentencing of Monareng.

Sgt Mbuli said residents should make sure they record the serial numbers of their appliances, because at times it is difficult to trace them back to the owners when they were recovered.

Residents are also requested to report all cases to the police and to assist them during investigations.

They should also not offer accommodation to people who they do not know.
