A breeding ground for crime

Mr Mbonani acknowledged that they cannot control everything at the rank because everyone has access to it.

The community has raised numerous complaints about illegal activities that occur at the Standerton Taxi Rank.

They alleged that people get robbed in town and the thieves run to the taxi rank.

According to Mr Mandla Mbonani, chairman of the Standerton Taxi Association, they have not received any complaints from the public, but the police have brought it to their attention that thieves use the taxi rank as an escape route.

Mr Mbonani acknowledged that they cannot control everything at the rank because everyone has access to it.

“We have requested the Lekwa Municipality to put up a fence that will help us control what happens at the rank,” Mr Mbonani said.

According to him, the municipality told them that they did not budget for such an expense, but to apply for funds from the national government.

Mr Mbonani said they asked the municipality to help them in this regard.

“We want the taxi rank to be a safe environment for the commuters and the drivers, but we cannot do this alone.”

He said they also asked the police to provide them with a mobile police station.

“We strongly believe that police visibility will make the rank a safer place for everybody.”

According to Lt Fanie Nhlabathi, communications officer of the Standerton Police, they can provide a police caravan, but there are not enough police officers to be stationed there.
