Police meet with tavern owners

According to him, the ideal time to close taverns is 12am and all tavern owners know this.

The Sakhile Police had a meeting with tavern owners from Sakhile on 19 November.

Sakhile residents raised concerns about taverns, saying they operate until the early hours of the morning.

The police are unhappy about the number of criminal offences that occur in taverns.

They said offences such as murder, assault and rape are connected to these establishments.

According to the police, many tavern owners ignore the law.

They said failure to comply with legislation could result in losing their licences.

“Tavern owners are not supposed to operate through the night, but most of them do,” Lt-Col Emmanuel Mbatha, Sakhile station commander, said.

According to him, the ideal time to close taverns is 12am and all tavern owners know this.

He said this must be standard practice in Sakhile.

Lt-Col Mbatha said everyone should vacate the building when it is time to close.

According to him, the owners must employ security guards that will ensure that everything runs smoothly.

He said the guards can help restore peace in the taverns.
