New developments at the dumpsite

Vehicles now drive to the dumpsite and around the old dumping area, take a detour and drivers offload the rubbish on the far left hand side, close to the palisade fence

The old dumping area at the Standerton dumpsite will not be used anymore.

The area at the back of it has now been allocated for people to dump.

Vehicles now drive to the dumpsite and around the old dumping area, take a detour and drivers offload the rubbish on the far left hand side, close to the palisade fence.

The situation has not improved though, scavengers continue to collect recyclable material without any restrictions.

There is still smoke coming from the site as a result of the fires that are started daily.

The Lekwa Municipality said they will rehabilitate the Standerton dumpsite in February.

According to a municipal employee, they were going to plant grass over the waste, but those plans have not materialised.

This employee said they were waiting for the Department of Environmental Affairs to approve the rehabilitation designs to continue with the project.

A mountain of waste from the old dumping area is clearly visible from Kosmospark and Florapark and also from the Secunda Road.

According to Mr Linda Tshabalala, municipal manager, this is not a municipal project, but highly regulated by the Department of Environmental Affairs.

He said they create a “cell” and close it afterwards.
