The Mpumalanga Department of Education has established a trauma and counselling services to assist learners experiencing stress related disorders.

Learners and parents are encouraged to use the departmental toll free line 0800 203 116 where they will be linked to a specialist who will assist them with their challenges.

Sleeping disorders, negative thoughts, non-participation in routine activities are some of the common signs and symptoms of depression.

MEC for Education Ms Reginah Mhaule said learners must realise that when they feel depressed or suicidal, it’s not a character of weakness but a sign of deep-seated pain or intense emotional pain and they must learn to deal with stress in a healthy way.

Parents are also encouraged to be wary of suicide warning signs which could include talking about killing or harming oneself, acting recklessly or calling and visiting people to say goodbye.

Members of the family can assist learners cope by finding someone to talk to, engage such a learner in daily routines and encourage them to do things that excite them.
