Parents seek help for their addicted children

Nyaope users are taking positive steps in Lebohang in an attempt to quit the drug and hope to get funds to go to rehab.

LEBOHANG – Concerned residents and parents have established an awareness campaign, Operation Quit Nyaope.

This came after Nyaope users’ desperate cry for help to quit the drug.

Parents’ search for help led to a meeting with Mr Mtungwa Mkhatshwa, a motivational speaker and community worker.

Mr Mkhatshwa mobilised Nyaope addicts who were willing to get help, with their parents and other residents to begin the campaign.

“It is not an easy thing to do, because we are not professionals but their willingness to quit the drug makes this a success.”

Mr Mkhatswa meets with the Nyaope users who are willing quitters every Tuesday morning under the tree next to the Lebohang Clinic.

He prays with them and motivates them.

“After that we do our daily activities, such as visiting clinics, the various orphanages and old age homes.

“We also rotate their homes for gardening.”

Mr Mkhatswa said the activities help the addicts reduce the number of dozes they take a day.

  • Nyaope is a cocktail that could includes dagga, rat poison, crushed objects such as glass, and even anti-retro-viral medication. “I want to quit”

A 23-year-old user said he misses his sober senses, because the drug has turned him into someone he does not know.

He said he was recently in a coma for about a week after he was a victim of mob justice.

“I want to quit this thing, because it is killing me, but I cannot.

“I was beaten by the community and my friend was beaten to death after we were accused of stealing something.

“This drug is a demon that has taken over my soul and is torturing my life,” he said.

Addicts become thieves

The group of men admitted they are stealing from their families and the community.

They said the addiction is expensive and the craving for the drug is unbearable, that is why they end up stealing to get high.

They have different stories to tell of how they began abusing Nyaope, however most were introduced to Nyaope by friends.
