Leandra CPF gets empowered

CPF members should not wait to react when a crime has already happened, but they should be proactive to prevent and combat it.

LEANDRA – Mpumalanga Department of Safety, Security and Liaison conducted a workshop for Community Policing Forum (CPF) members in Leandra on Friday, 28 August.

Leandra Police Station Commander, Capt Isaac Magagula, acknowledged members for coming out in numbers to attend the workshop.

“You should know that some of you will pull out, but it does not mean that you should give up doing the good work.

“You should stand firm and continue with the work,” he said.

He said it is important that the police work with the community, because when crime happens, the police are not there but the community is.

He further said the CPF should help the police to uproot crime in the community and to make sure crime is prevented before it happens.

“Be a watchdog for your neighbours and do not politicise the sector forums,” said Capt Magagula.

CPF Cluster Chairman, Mr Phindile Sibande, said members should promote cooperation between the community and the police.

He emphasised that CPF members should not wait to react when a crime has already happened, but they should be proactive to prevent and combat crime.

“You are not allowed to create mobs with the focus of going to the township to beat the community,” said Mr Sibande, reminding CPF members that they are not the police, but partners in policing.

Mr Lebo Tlou from the Department of Safety, Security and Liaison said their main task is to check whether the CPF is working.

He further said they are there to give guidance on how a CPF should operate in collaboration with the community and the police.
