Enyokeni residents demand services

Enyokeni community raises concerns.

Unhappy Enyokeni residents in Ext 4 have raised concerns about the lack of progress in the area.

According to them they receive minimal services from the Lekwa Municipality.

They did not have toilets for years, the municipality only built them toilets a few years ago.

The toilets are not situated inside their yards though, they are outside.

According to one of them he was in the toilet when a drunk motorist drove into it.

“I was stuck in the toilet after the crash and also sustained some injuries during the incident.”

Water leaks are also an issue with clean water flowing down the streets.

According to residents a pipe burst and it has been leaking for a while.

Children play in the water and the roads are muddy.

“The municipality is failing the residents,” Mr Collen Sikhakhane, DA councillor, said.

“They have been encouraging the public to use water sparingly, but can not practice what they preach.” Residents also share stands, with two or three shacks in one yard. This informal settlement is one of the oldest in Sakhile.

Enyokeni allegedly was established before Rooikoppen, Ext 6 and 7.

According to the residents the municipality prioritises other areas which are more developed.

Mr Sikhakhane said all the issues the community raised were forwarded to the municipality.

A meeting to report back to the community was held on 20 May.

The municipality could not comment at the time of going to press.
