Secunda Fire station is thankful for medical bags

Langamed and Carmica give back to the community.

SECUNDA – The fire department got brand-new medical bags for the ambulances on Thursday, 9 April when Langamed South Ambulance Services and Carmica Medical Distributors sponsored and handed over these bags stocked with basic medical accessories.

Ms Shelly Shabalala, chief fire officer at Secunda Fire Station, thanked these businesses for the donations and said: “The duty of firefighters include saving the lives of people in the community and to offer first aid at accidents of fire scenes.

“We work with Langamed that is one of the key stakeholders in an emergency in the region.”

She said the medical bags will be distributed among the six fire stations in the region.

Mr Carel Groenewald, owner of Carmica Medical Distributors, thanked the fire department for the opportunity to help them and said as a former fireman and paramedic, he understands the challenge firefighters are facing.

“We developed bags and equipment to cater specifically for the needs of firefighters and it is our pleasure to help,” said Mr Groenewald.

Mr Shayne van der Heever, owner of Langamed South Ambulance Services, said he also has knowledge of being a firefighter as he comes from a firefighter background as well.

“I have been on the ground with minimal equipment, knowing I could do more and I have seen the frustration on the faces of firemen.

“This is my project to give back to the community for the blessings they have given me regarding my company over the last 10 years.

“My aim was to get Govan Mbeki fire services and Mr Groenwald together so that they can also get the same kind of service that I have been getting throughout the years.”

Ms Shabalala said the firefighters were getting frustrated, because they did not have the necessary equipment.”

The medical bags costs R3 000 each.
