Blood service urgently needs blood

Donate blood at Sasol today before 3pm.

SECUNDA – The Teksa branch of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) urged people to donate blood as they are experiencing a crisis with low blood stock levels.

People working at Sasol can support them today from 9am to 3pm and donate blood.

According to Ms Vanessa Raju, Communications Manager of SANBS, nearly 40 per cent of the blood they collect come from schools and universities and because of the holidays, they are unable to host blood drives.

“This together with many people who also take a break, impacts the blood stock levels significantly,” said Ms Raju.

“Currently, the blood stock at a national level is 1.7 days and the SANBS needs to maintain a stock level of five days at all times by collecting 3 000 units of blood daily to meet the demand of the thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for their survival.”

If you meet the minimum requirements to donate blood, help the blood service.

The minimum requirements are that you must weigh at least 50kg, be between 16 and 65 years old, lead a safe sexual lifestyle, be in general good health and consider your blood safe for transfusion to a patient.

Visit the blood service’s branch in Sasol or in Horwood Street or contact them at 017 631 1652.
