What happened to the River Park train?

The train was run on weekends, it had a few open carriages which transported youngsters on a trip around the park while parents enjoyed a braai with family and friends on the banks of the Vaal River.

Graffiti can be a nuisance, but other graffiti can bring back childhood memories.

After an inspection at the River Park by the Standerton Advertiser a while ago, a picture on the wall of the old train station, stating “I liked trains”, raised the question of what happened to the train.

The train was run on weekends, it had a few open carriages which transported youngsters on a trip around the park while parents enjoyed a braai with family and friends on the banks of the Vaal River.

According to Mr Peter Daniel of the Standerton Lions Club the little train was run by the Lions and sold to the Heidelberg Train Museum in the early 2000s when he had just became a member of the club.

“If my memory serves me right there were a few issues which led to the sale of the train,” Mr Daniel said.

“There was difficulty getting insurance to cover anyone involved in case of an accident.”

Mr Daniel also said the running expenses became an issue.

“The other problem was that there was not always an operator available to run the train on weekends.”
