Municipality angers civil organisation

“We are tired of these mind games”

The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) has had enough of Msukaligwa Municipality management’s empty promises of a meeting to discuss issues related to service delivery.

Last Monday, a meeting between municipal management and Sanco was scheduled for Friday at 10:00 at the Municipal Council Chamber.

However, municipal management did not attend, but sent a letter placing the meeting on hold, pending a meeting between Sanco and the ruling party’s regional leadership scheduled for Monday, 2 February.

In a twist of events, a Sanco provincial executive committee member, Mr Jabu Mndebele, Head of Essential Services, told the Highvelder that he received a phone call on Sunday night, informing him that the meeting was rescheduled for Thursday, as a result of the ruling party’s REC meeting taking place on Monday.

“We are tired of these mind games and delaying tactics by the municipality and ruling party. As a result, we had decided not to attend Thursday’s meeting until we meet with our 19 branches in Msukaligwa for them to give us a directive, but out of respect and of our membership with the ruling party, we’ll give them an opportunity to meet,” said Mr Mndebele in a telephonic interview with the newspaper.

According to a letter submitted to the Highvelder, Sanco wants to discuss the state of roads both in towns and townships; RDP houses that were promised to people but were never built; land where people can build their own houses; electricity problems; title deeds; exposed electricity distribution boxes and substations posing a danger to the community.

According to Sanco, this is not the first time they have scheduled a meeting with the municipality, only for it to be cancelled. They have also tried engaging the ruling party to intervene, but to no avail.
