No building plans submitted

Enquiries made after a report about illegal electricity connections at a property in Davel Street in last week’s Highvelder have revealed that no building plans were approved by the Msukaligwa Municipality for buildings to be erected.

An 80 m-long cable that was illegally connected to an electricity kiosk and concealed underground was disconnected and removed by technicians of the Msukaligwa electrical engineering department last week.

The manner in which the connections had been made and the general shoddy workmanship of the buildings on the premises raised doubts as to whether proper plans had been submitted for approval by a building control inspector.

This was brought to the attention of the relevant municipal department and an inspection of the property was carried out on 25 November.

Several contraventions of the Ermelo Town Planning Scheme and the National Building Regulations and Standards authority were found.

The contraventions include building without approved plans, occupying or using a building without an occupation certificate, deviation from an approved building plan and failure to safeguard a service installation.

The property owner was given 14 days to rectify the matter by submitting plans for the new building and ordered to vacate five new flats.

Failure to comply with this order could result in steps being taken against the property owner.

The public is requested to report suspected illegal building operations and illegal electricity and water connections to Ms E Nkosi (Building Information) at 017 801 3605 or Mr NM Zulu (Chief Building Technician) at 017 801 3610
