Two pupils broke stadium’s fences

Two pupils vandalise Evander Stadium

EVANDER – Two high school pupils were recently caught vandalising the Evander Stadium.

They allegedly broke the fence to find a shorter path through Evander to the surrounding townships and when they were confronted by a resident, not one of them commented.

The Ridge Times visited the stadium and saw that the dressing rooms are being used as accommodation and the toilets are broken and being removed from the premises.

“Homeless people use these rooms and get in at irregular times at night to sleep there,” a source said.

Residents said the people who live at the stadium are unknown.

The stadium is used for various sport and community events and the Govan Mbeki Municipality did maintenance at the stadium recently.

Several local soccer teams practise at the stadium weekly and said it is embarrassing when visitors have to be accommodated during matches.

“The pupils were not arrested, but action will be taken against them if they cause damage to the stadium again,” said Sgt Sibusiso Mbule from the Evander Police Stadium.

“The Municipality took notice of the problem and we have requested that the damage by the stadium will be repaired,” said Mr Henry Masango, Head of communication and marketing of the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
