Residents throw rubbish along side of road

Henry Masango condems those who dump garbage next to the road.

eMBALENHLE – Mandela Section and Extension 7 residents have resorted to throwing their garbage on the side of the road.

Vendors said people throw dead pets there and some even burn the trash and the smoke is not good for children and old people.

She said this behaviour is perpetuated by the Govan Mbeki Municipality for not collecting the garbage on time.

“People must change their minds about this, because it is affecting us negatively.

“If people do not change, the municipality should be able to fine people who dump garbage, but the municipality should collect the garbage on time and put rubbish bins in place before they can resort to fining people who do the dumping,” she said.

Mr Henry Masango, head of communication and marketing of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, said: ” We do acknowledge the impact of waste collection outside the normal schedule, which sometimes can be attributed to various why’s and wherefores.

“However, the situation is speedily rectified so as to avoid the spread of ailments.

“There are by-laws governing waste management, but much emphasis is about public awareness about their action instead of always relying on law enforcement only.”
