Give 30 minutes back to community

Blood stock levels are low over festive season.

SECUNDA – Ms Vanessa Raju, communications manager of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) asked the public to support them by donating blood.

“We are fast approaching the festive season, a time when relaxation, gifts and family are on the minds of many,” said Ms Raju.

“However, it is also a time when for many, the demands of our day-to-day lives still continue, like in the case of doctors who work hard at saving lives and in most cases can only do so with the help of blood and blood products.

“Traditionally December is a difficult time for the SANBS, as we are unable to collect the 3 000 units of blood daily that are needed to treat patients, such as those who are terminally ill, let alone any trauma incidents.

“If previous year’s blood stock levels, over the same period, is anything to go by, we know that we have some tough times ahead.”

She encouraged the public to find 30 minutes during the holidays to donate blood.

“While you are relaxing and enjoying the break, your blood will be out there saving up to three lives.”

Teksa Blood Service will be hosting several blood drives during the holidays.

The Govan Mbeki Municipal Mayoral Blood Drive takes place on 5 December at the municipal office in Secunda from 9am to 3.30pm.

The Jingle Blood Drive will be held at Teksa Blood Service ofrom 9am to 1.30pm on 6 December.

“It is only possible to meet the demand with the help of regular and committed blood donors,” said Ms Raju.
