Speaker urges councillors to reach out to the people

Speaker will establish a public participation committee that will enable the council to advance work in public participation.

SECUNDA – Mr Cyril Gwiji, Speaker, congratulated the Govan Mbeki Municipality for obtaining an unqualified opinion report from the Auditor General on Thursday, 27 November at the council meeting.

He said the councillors and municipal employees must work together to obtain a clean audit opinion for the financial year 2014/15.

“It is a good story to tell and proves that together we are moving South Africa forward.

“A clean audit opinion report is possible, we just have to improve our skills.”

Mr Gwiji urged councillors to enhance their relationship and communication with the community.

“Through a back-to-basic concept we are going to ensure that we reach out to the communities in the Govan Mbeki Municipality.

“This office is going to conduct regular community satisfaction surveys in order to know the problems faced by the people daily.

“We will coordinate and implement the Know Your Community – Know Your Ward Councillor Campaign.”

He said the implementation of a ward operational plan is already underway and asked the cooperation of all ward councillors.

Mr Gwiji said the distribution of land for human settlement is crucial on the council’s agenda and that council will ensure that they identify land to minimise illegal invasion.

“We know that we are challenged by economic factors as many people move to this area.

“We are staying in one of the highly industrialised municipalities and people come for job hunting.”
