Residents in desperate need of municipal intervention

Parents are also worried about the illegal dump site because their children play there and might get ill.

Residents in Protea Street in Sharpeville have allegedly raised numerous concerns to the Lekwa Municipality, but the situation has not improved.

Neighbours, Ms Mamsy Labuschagne and Mr Jack Johnson, have reported their problems about electricity, water, sewage and leaking pipes, but nothing has been done.

Ms Labuschagne had to illegally connect electricity to her old house after the municipality moved her prepaid meter to the RDP where her children now stay.

Her toilet is not functioning properly and the water pressure in the tap is low.

Her story was published in the Standerton Ibis on 7 November.

Mr Jack Johnson also expressed his dissatisfaction about the illegal dump site next his house.

His story was published in the Standerton Ibis on 31 October.

Parents are also worried about the illegal dump site because their children play there and might get ill.

They claimed the municipality was informed.

According to Ms Labuschagne her problem is still the same.

“They have not been here to fix anything, we are still waiting for them,” she said

These residents are desperate for municipal intervention.

According to Mr Louis Jansen van Rensburg, Ward 4 councillor, he is not aware of these issues in Protea Street.

“These problems are prevalent in most places in town and we have reported it to the municipality, to no avail,” Mr Van Rensburg said.

He also said he will follow up on the matter.
