Residents vow to help police fight crime

“Make sure as parents that you know the whereabouts of your children.”

eMBALENHLE – Const Elizabeth Mabena, Police Sector 3 manager, asked residents to unite in the fight again crime.

She said unity among residents will help to reduce the high rate of crime in the area.

This was said at the Sector 3 Crime Awareness Campaign held in the Chris Hani Section on Friday, 14 November.

She said residents should not allow the crime rate to prevail, but they must fight it.

“It is upon us to deal with this and to ensure that all those who are committing crime, are arrested.

“It is time that you break the silence and to talk about suspected crimes and suspects among yourselves and to the police.

“However I condemn mob justice. If you apprehend a suspect, do not assault them but call the police or take them to the police station.

“Mob justice is a crime.”

Const Mabena urged residents to not leave their homes unattended when they go away and to also put up house numbers for police to easily identify a house in case of an emergency.

Mr Joseph Mhlongo, CPF chairman, encouraged parents to enhance parenting systems in their homes.

“The large number of teenagers who are found in the streets at night, is a disgrace.

“Make sure as parents that you know the whereabouts of your children.

“They become victims or suspects of crime because of they go to taverns at night.”

Residents complained about two shebeens in their area and asked the police to control their closing times.

They also urged the local council to follow up on the houses that are rented and the landlords.

They said most of the crimes happen at those houses, because crime suspects know their landlords are not around.

The councillor promised to follow up on this and urged residents to cooperate with the police in the fight against crime.
