KPMG awards teachers

Academy was established in light of the acute shortage of chartered accountants in South Africa.

TRICHARDT – KPMG held its annual Accounting Academy prize giving ceremony on Wednesday, 29 October at the Swiss Ranch.

KPMG, in partnership with Osizweni Science Centre established the Accounting Academy in 2013 in light of the acute shortage of chartered accountants in South Africa and they equip teachers with the skills and knowledge to empower their pupils to excel.

Workshops in accounting are held on a monthly basis for teachers of 22 secondary schools in the Standerton Sub-region.

KPMG employees prepare material based on the Grade 12 accounting curriculum recommended by the district subject advisors.

Teachers are given the yearly programme at the beginning of the year with all the topics that will be covered,

This allows for ample preparation and identification of areas that might need more focus.

The District Department of Basic Education is working on an improvement of last year’s matric pass rate of 56.9 per cent.

Mr Okkie Potgieter, managing partner at KPMG, asked that principals and teachers guide their pupils into keeping mathematics in Grade 10.

“Mathematics opens a whole new world of career opportunities for a pupil to follow,” said Mr Potgieter.
