Majuba leaves us powerless

Eskom explains the reason for the load shedding.

HIGHVELD – No load shedding is expected in the Govan Mbeki municipal area today, 3 November.

However, Eskom said in a statement people can expect blackouts from 8am to 10pm this week.

One of the coal storage silo’s at Eskom’s Majuba power station near Standerton has collapsed and the conveyer belt system, which feeds coal to the power station, was damaged.

This was the reason for load shedding on Sunday, 2 November.

“The silo cracked and employees were evacuated immediately,” Eskom spokesman, Mr Andrew Etzinger, said.

According to a Eskom statement the collapse caused the loss of 1800MW.

“Before the collapse, Majuba supplied 3600MW, roughly 10 per cent of the country’s electricity capacity,” Etzinger said.
