VIDEO – Samaritans bring hope to community

Shop owners in the Oriental Plaza give back to the community every Thursday.

Shop owners in the Oriental Plaza give back to the community every Thursday, come rain or shine.

Not only do the old and less fortunate get handouts weekly, but the local pigeon community is fed daily.

The birds are fed at 9am and again at 1pm.

“We began feeding the pigeons years ago and it became a daily occurrence,” Mr Solly Hadjee, owner of Bhabas Shoe Shop, said.

“There are four shopkeepers in the complex that take turns to feed the pigeons.

“We also hand out chips, oranges and other goodies to the less fortunate in our community every Thursday afternoon at 3pm.”

People arrive in numbers to receive what is on offer and meander from shop to shop.

The birds are also a sight to see as they flock in their hundreds when seed is scattered in the parking area.

It is a heartwarming experience to witness Samaritans at work, not asking for any recognition.
