The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) Ermelo hosted their annual medal ceremony on Saturday.

Guests were entertained by singer David Fourie and treated to a buffet dinner.

Donors received medals for different milestones reached, ranging from 50 to 325 units donated.

The SANBS is a non-profit organisation that operates in eight provinces. They do not receive any government funding and all revenue is used for cost recovery.

Apart from blood procurement, processing and issuing, the SANBS also has a Cryopreservation facility and specialised laboratory services.

Cryopreservation or cryoconservation is a process where cells, whole tissue, or any other substances susceptible to damage caused by chemical reactivity or time are preserved by cooling to sub-zero temperatures)
One unit of blood is divided into three parts, namely red blood cells, plasma and platelets, which in turn can make a difference in three patients’ lives.

Donors were referred to as angels and they were commended for their unselfish contributions.
