Cats upset neighbours

Woman has 30 cats in yard in residential area in Secunda.

SECUNDA – Neighbours are not happy that a woman living in Sable Street has about 30 cats.

They said they have contacted the Highveld Ridge SPCA for help, as well as the municipality, but to no avail.

The Echo and Ridge Times asked the SPCA for comment, but the senior inspector, Ms Jenneth Geel, said she could not comment on the issue.

Residents think it is against the law to have so many cats in one yard, but there is no specific by-law regarding the number of cats you are allowed to keep in your yard.

The head of marketing and communications of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, Mr Henry Masango, asked for the address and said the provincial department will investigate.

According to one of the neighbours, Mr Tielman de Villiers, the cats are in his and other neighbours’ yards more than in their owner’s yard.

“These cats come into our yards and lie on our vehicles and scratch them.

“We have asked these people in a nice manner to make a plan with all their cats, but that did not help either,” said Mr De Villiers.

The neighbours also drew up a petition and signed it to show that they are against a resident having so many cats in one yard.
