Municipality takes hours to fix waterpipe

Clean water streams down the street in Secunda.

SECUNDA – Some residents are apparently sitting without water after a waterpipe was damaged by contractors in Lanzerac Street yesterday.

Mr Encee van Huyssteen, DA councillor spoke to the contractors and according to him they reported the problem right after it happened, but three hours later they were still waiting for the municipality to send workers to fix it.

According to residents they got SMSs informing them that their water will be off.

The Echo and Ridge Times contacted the Head of Marketing and Communications of Govan Mbeki Municipaity, Mr Henry Masango, but he could not confirm anything as he was out of town.

A municipal employee at the call centre however confirmed that the municipality did send SMSs to those residents affected by the water problem.

“Only those who are going to be affected got the SMSs,” said the municipal employee.
