Police close down shebeen in eMba

Captain urges shebeen owners to register and comply with the National Liquor Act.

eMBALENHLE – Police closed down a shebeen that was operating without a valid permit in Extension 25.

The owner was arrested and officers also confiscated all the alcohol.

Capt Mangonze Nkosi, spokesman for the police, said the many unlicensed shebeens are a serious concern.

“Most of the assault cases reported are taking place at these liquor outlets.

“Shebeen owners must do the right thing and register their businesses and comply with the National Liquor Act.

“Concerns are people’s safety and evacuation measures, security in terms of making sure that customers are not carrying weapons, trading hours and most importantly age verification.”

Capt Nkosi said in normal circumstances, the owner the shebeen will released if he or she pays the fine or appear in court.
