Sipho aspires to become a leading designer

Sipho Malatsi (27) is a fashion designer who says local designers need more recognition and support.

eMBALENHLE – Sipho Malatsi (27), a fashion designer, is determined to defy all odds standing in his way of becoming a nationally recognised designer.

He began designing clothes about seven years ago.

Mr Malatsi said: “I love designing clothes.

“While growing up, I always changed the jeans my parents had bought me and redesigned them to look unique.”

He designs all types of clothes in the back room of his parents’ home.

He said his designs appeal to all age groups because he is more into designing day-to-day clothes, not only for special occasions.

“I am in into eKasi (township) wear.

“However I cater for the individual customer and considers his or her personality type and body structure.”

Malatsi is facing many challenges, such as funding and exposure.

His work place is also a problem because the room is very small.

“I wish the local municipality could build us a place that will give all local designers a place to work, because there are many designers who are also struggling with a work place.

“We would not mind sharing a place even if we are different brands.”

Malatsi is inspired by the nature and the Word of God and looks up to Zanazuko Sithethwa, another designer.

He hosted his first fashion show in 2007 with his friends which he believes opened doors for him.
