Police of Alexandra Road Police Station from Pietermaritzburg arrested a man at the cemetery near the Standerton Old Age Home on Thursday, 4 September in connection with rape.

His stepdaughter apparently opened a case in Pietermaritzburg in May.

The Standerton Advertiser received a call from Const Bongane Khumalo from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) who enquired about the man and his wife’s whereabouts.

The information was passed on to the Pietermaritzburg FCS unit who apprehended the suspect.

The man and his wife have not been in Standerton long and are known beggars in town.

They stayed in a small dwelling on the premises at the cemetery after the man was recently employed with the responsibility of cleaning and maintaining the Muslim graves.

While he worked, his wife would go to town and beg.

He was arrested and his wife detained for questioning.

They were returned to Pietermaritzburg where the said offence happened.

According to Lt Fanie Nhlabathi, communications officer of the Standerton Police, the man is likely to appear in court on Monday morning.
