Blind have access to library

Govan Mbeki establishes a library service for the visually impaired.

SECUNDA – The Govan Mbeki Municipality has joined hands with members of the Khuthala Association for the Blind to establish a room at the Secunda Public Library that is dedicated to the visually impaired.

This is part of the municipality’s goal to improve the level of service they render to people with disabilities.

Ms Maureen Sekwane, an assistant librarian, is in charge of the room that has all the latest technology.

Ms Betty Mofokeng, chairman of the association, said they want to educate the blind about their rights and to encourage them to use their talents.

“We want those who are blind to come out of their homes, because most think that if you are blind, you cannot reach your goals.

“We are encouraging them to join the association, because they can learn a lot at the library.

“They will be able to learn how to us a computer and the Internet.”

Mr Bongane Mthimunye, deputy chairman of the association, said they are visiting homes and various schools to persuade other blind people to join the association.

The association needs a digital accessible information system and walking sticks.

Ms Mofokeng said they also need special wrist watches to keep track of time during meetings, and transport for their members.

People who want to take part in the association’s initiative, can contact Ms Mofokeng at 079 673 7769 or Mr Mthimunye at 072 299 3662.
