Disaster averted due to quick response.

Quick response by the fire brigade and farmers in the surrounding area prevented much of the damage that could have been caused.

Near disaster was averted on Wednesday 28 May in the late afternoon when a veld fire got out of control.

It began next to the Secunda Road about 100m outside of town and continued across the back of town towards the Ermelo Road.

Quick response by the fire brigade and farmers in the surrounding area prevented much of the damage that could have been caused.

Anxious residents were peeping over their garden walls as the fire made its way towards the back end of Florapark.

The area includes a kindergarten, where the concerned caretaker of the children phoned the fire brigade and their response was that they are attending to the fire and to evacuate the children. Luckily the fire had been taken care of and did not pose any danger to them.

A farmer’s feed for his animals, stored for the winter months also burned.

The stack of bails got the brunt of the fire and was still glowing during the night.

After the fire was taken care of and the smoke had cleared, all left was a thick, black scar across the countryside.
