Gert Sibande College Students graduate

Gert Sibande College students graduated on Friday, 23 May.

SECUNDA – About 182 students from the Gert Sibande College graduated at the Johannes Stegmann Theatre on Friday, 23 May.

Mr Nick Balkrishen, CEO of the Gert Sibande College, urged the graduates to uphold and respect the values and vision of the late former president of South Africa, Dr Nelson Mandela.

He said students should set an example to other young people by being the best in what they do and that they should find ways to contribute to the dreams and values of Dr Mandela.

Dr Mopedi Mohale, guest speaker, congratulated the graduates and said: “I understand it was not easy, you had doubts about the courses you were doing, but you persevered and I take my hat off to you.”

He also spoke about Gert Sibande after whom the college was named.

Gert Sibande had an obligation to serve farm workers after he saw the conditions they worked in and lived under, but he never expected anything in return.

“Graduates, you should not have a sense of entitlement when you go out to the work place, but I urge you to use the skills you have acquired at the college.”

Mr John McDowall, a 43-year-old graduate, said: “This is an achievement for me.

“I advise the youth to never give up on their dreams and to work hard to achieve them.”
