Mpumalanga party leaders thank voters

ANC wins elections in Govan Mbeki Municipality with more than 70 cent of the vote followed by the DA with more than 16 per and the EFF with more than six per cent.

HIGHVELD – The ANC won the elections in the Govan Mbeki Municipality area with more than 70 cent of the votes.

The DA came second with more than 16 per cent and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) third with more than six per cent.

The Freedom Front Plus, National Freedom Party, Inkhatha Freedom Party, African Christian Democratic Party, African Independent Congress, United Democratic Movement, Cope, African People’s Convention, Agang South Africa, Pan Africanist Congress of Azania, Azanian People’s Organisation, United Christian Democratic Party, AL Jama-ah, Front National, Minority Front, Bushbuckridge Residents Association (BRA) Workers and Socialist Party, Patriotic Alliance, Pan Africanist Movemen, Ubuntu Part, United Congress, People’s Alliance, Kingdom Government Movement, Kiss, Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa and First National Liberation Alliance all received less than one per cent of the votes.

The ANC won the provincial elections with more than 70 per cent, followed by the DA with more than 10 per cent and EFF with more than six per cent.

The BRA had more than one per cent of the votes.

The ANC secured 24 seats in the Provincial Legislature, the DA has three, the EFF has two and BRA has one.

More than 1.8 million registered to vote in the province and more than 1.3 million votes were counted.

Mr David Mabuza, ANC chairman, said his party will ensure that it closes the gap between the leaders and residents in the next administration.

He said most service delivery protests in the province were caused by a distance created between the leaders and the people.

“Our province later became stable because we had to go down to the people and explain why certain things were not happening, and if we come back into power again we will ensure that we improve on this one,” said Mr Mabuza.

Mr Anthony Benadie, DA leader, said people have shown their confidence in the party to hold Government to account and came out in their numbers to increase the party’s provincial share of the vote by more than three per cent.

“The DA is the only party to have consistently grow in every national election since 1994.

“This mandate not only shows the trust the electorate holds in the DA, but also shows that people are increasingly recognising the party as the only credible opposition party.

“ A vote for smaller opposition parties is a wasted vote.”

Mr James Masango, DA provincial chairman, and Ms Tarnia Baker, coordinator of the DA Women’s Network and Ward Councillor in Secunda, will join Ms Sonja Boshoff and Mr Henro Kruger, Ward Councillor in eMalahleni, representing Mpumalanga as members of Parliament in the National Assembly.

Representatives of the EFF did not comment at the time of going to press.
