Robbers target Markhams

Six men, pretending to be customers, robbed a retail shop in town on 9 April.

STANDERTON – Three suspects, aged between 30 and 34, appeared in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on a charge of business robbery on 11 April.

Six thieves, pretending to be customers, entered a retail shop in town on 9 April.

They suddenly produced firearms, yelled at the employees and customers to stop their business.

The robbers violently forced the employees into the storeroom, tied them and hastily took clothing and cell phones, valued at R525 000.

The criminals also stole a firearm and cash from a customer. They then fled the scene in three cars, a black VW Golf, mounted with false registration number VHY 288 GP, a white Hyundai with registration number XJD 882 GP and a white bakkie, with an unknown registration number.

Police were called to the scene and investigated information regarding the description of the vehicles.

Their diligence paid off as they cornered three of the suspects at a road construction site near Greylingstad and arrested them.

Two vehicles, the Golf and the Hyundai, allegedly involved in the robbery, were confiscated. They also recovered some of the stolen items.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lt-Gen Thulani Ntobela, was pleased with the arrest and asked the public to work together with the police in identifying the remaining suspects.
