Rail company holds safety awareness campaign

Ward councillor Link Mnisi thanked both Transnet and Eskom for their continued support of the community and expressed appreciation for the safety campaign.

Transnet Freight Rail’s safety and security division, together with Eskom and the Sheepmoor Police, recently held a safety campaign at Sheepmoor to educate people on the dangers associated with unsafe rail crossing and electricity.

Community members and learners from Bee Maseko Secondary School attended the outreach programme and were educated on how to safely cross a railway line.

Transnet’s safety administration officer, Sipho Magagula, gave an address on the company’s core functions and its commitment to safety in areas the company operates in.

He later hosted an interesting question-and-answer session where people in attendance won themselves Transnet branded gifts.

George Mathelela, a safety representative, and Phindile Sibanyoni, an investigator, both from Eskom also took time to give information about electricity, dangers associated with illegal connections and how to deal with exposed electrical cables.

During their session, they also shared safety tips and the emergency number to call in case of any problems.

W/O Mandla Mkwhanazi reiterated the importance of respecting railway lines and electricity and encouraged community members not to hesitate reporting known cable-theft criminals or any matters relating to railway and electricity.

Ward councillor Link Mnisi thanked both Transnet and Eskom for their continued support of the community and expressed appreciation for the safety campaign.
