Students protest against student support office

Gert Sibande College students protest against the elimination of their Students Representative Council candidates on the day of voting.

EVANDER – Gert Sibande College students protested against the elimination of their Students Representative Council candidates on the day of voting on Monday, 3 February.

They said the were shocked when they were told that the candidates they had voted for were not competent and the voting ballot papers were scraped and destroyed on the instructions of the acting campus manager, Mr Jannie Pretoruis.

The students also complained about the issues of pending bursaries without any updates given to them and expressed their disappointment with the student support office.

“The student support office is doing nothing about our problems and concerns and instead of helping us, the staff members are rude.

“We are sick and tired of this and will not be attending class until we take a resolution on Saturday, 8 February,” said a student.

The Echo and Ridge Times contacted Mr Pretoruis who confirmed that the students were on strike.

He said: “I am not in a position to give a statement now (7 February).

“We will be having a meeting with the top management an I will give a statement later.”
