Boy (8) drowns next to his house

“We feel sorry for the affected family, but we (the police) have warned the community several times to address their children to steer clear of such sites.

eMZINONI – Sihle Nkosi (8) drowned in a small dam next to his house on 10 January.

Const Cynthia Mtsweni, communications officer for the eMzinoni Police Station, said several children were playing in a small dam next to Sihle’s house when the incident occurred.

She said they always played at this site, but due to the recent high rainfall, the dam was probably deeper than they had expected.

It was the second drowning since December and the police said that they have warned the community to be vigilant.

“We feel sorry for the affected family, but we have warned the community several times to address their children to steer clear of such sites.

“We therefore once again plead with the community to be cautious and be informed of the whereabouts of their children.

“Such incidents can be avoided.”

Two young boys retrieved Sihle’s body from the dam before the police arrived at the scene.

Not knowing whether it was the right thing to do, they fled when they saw the police.

The police later traced the boys and thanked them for attempting to rescue the boy.

Sihle’s funeral arrangements were not known on Monday.
