Learners protest outside circuit office in Burger Street, Standerton

A community representative, Mr Themba Shabangu, said the apart from learners losing valuable education time, other factors come into play.

Learners in their formative years protested outside the circuit office of the Department of Education in Burger Street early on 29 April, bringing their plight of lack of school transport to the forefront.

The children from Ext 8, accompanied by some parents, wanted to notify the department about the dilemma.

According to Ms Julia Nkosi, bus services to the primary schools Retsibile, Sifosesuthu, Thobelani, Nyandeni, Lesedi and iGugulabasha are affected.

“The problems began in the second term,” Ms Nkosi said.

She also said service providers’ contracts were the issue.

A community representative, Mr Themba Shabangu, said apart from learners losing valuable education time, other factors come into play.

“In some cases, they have to cross a railway line which is dangerous in itself and winter is approaching as well.”

A bus however, arrived at 8.45am to transport the learners back to Ext 8.

A peaceful protest was also held last week on the Leandra Road where the Standerton Police were on the scene to monitor the situation.

The Standerton Advertiser will contact the provincial spokesman of the Department of Education for comment as soon as possible.
