Osizweni learners learn the importance of helping the needy

School wants to produce learners who are not just studying to pass, but are transformed by the knowledge gained from experience.

Osizweni Secondary School in eMbalenhle’s Grade 9 learners helped needy families as part of their project of community development module.

From the discussions about the meaning of helping and uplifting the community, learners suggested to apply their theory into practice.

They participated in various projects that included volunteering at clinics and various community centres, while others requested donations of non perishable food to donate to the needy.

Ms Miliswa Nhlapo, educator, said it is important for the learners to practice what they learned so the information they got can be translated into knowledge.

“We want to produce learners who are not just studying to pass, but are transformed by the knowledge gained from experience,” said Ms Nhlapo.

Learners could not contain their excitement when they handed over food parcels to the families.

One of the learners said seeing the recipients accepting their donations made her realise that helping those in need, is priceless and that the memory will stay with her forever.

Ms Nhlapo added that it was not all about what they gave, but also about the transformation that took place within themselves as they were going through the process of giving.

She thanked the parents who supported their children by giving what they could to help the less fortunate.

“No learner was forced to contribute, the learners ran the project and I was only facilitating it for them,” said Ms Nhlapo.

She thanked the social service employees who helped to identify the families and facilitated the handing over of the food parcels.
