Sasol handed over R3 million in support of a HIV/AIDS community support initiatve.

Sasol handed over R3-m to Mpumalanga Government in the fight against HIV/Aids.

This initiative entails screening, testing, counselling and referral for treatment, as well as promoting testing and adherence to treatment.

Sasol pledged to collaborate with the Department of Health on HIV/Aids initiatives to support the achievement of the UNAIDS 90/90/90 target that was signed between the Department of Health, the South African National Aids Council and the South African Business Coalition on Health and Aids.

During the pilot phase, Sasol invested R2,5-m to implement the project in the Gert Sibande Municipal District, focusing on the Mkhondo and Govan Mbeki Municipalities’ informal and farm settlement areas.

The target population comprises contractors working for Sasol, as well as women in the community aged 15 to 45 years old.

According to Ms Maureen Mboshane, vice president of Corporate Affairs at Sasol, the project has been a success since inception.

The target, which was to screen, counsel and test 55 000 people, was exceeded by 100 per cent.

A large part of this project’s success, was the number of people affected by it in the local community.
