No immediate danger to Secunda and eMba residents after Sasol Secunda gas release

A gas release occurred at the Sasol Secunda site today, 12 May at about 12.40pm as a result of a ruptured gas line.

Emergency procedures have been activated and the area isolated to contain further gas release.

There was no explosion or ignition of the gas.

Two personnel were taken to the medical station and are currently being treated.

There is no immediate risk to the community.

Sasol said it remains committed to the safety of its employees, service providers and the community.

Sasol promised further information will be provided as soon as it becomes available.

In the meantime, Sasol employees said the alarms inside the Sasol Secunda plant can still be heard.

A chemical engineer said the wind is currently blowing the gasses away from the towns.

  • It is important that residents always heed the alarms in town and possible warnings, should it ever happen that we all need to go indoors and lock all doors and windows.

Further information will be provided as soon as it is available.
