Road leading to municipal dump in Secunda is closed

Mr André du Preez, owner of the land on which the dump is situated said members of the public must please refrain from dumping refuse on that road.

UPDATE:

SECUNDA – After deliberations with the municipality, the owner of the land on which the municipal dump is situated has agreed to give access to municipal refuse removal vehicles.

This comes after Mr Ernest Michele, the acting Municipal Manager entered into a verbal agreement with the owner that, Interwaste (the company who operates the dump and who have allegedly not been paid for three months) will be paid today.

Municipal refuse removal vehicles are being allowed through to the municipal dump based on a verbal agreement between the land owner and the acting municipal manager that the municipality will settle the account for services at the dump today.

Once Interwaste is paid, it is assumed that they will once again resume operations.

The owner of the land decided to close the road leading to the dump after receiving communication form Interwaste informing him that they were stopping operations due to non-payment.

In a preemptive move, and to avoid illegal dumping on his property, Mr Du Preez closed the road and denied residents with refuse-laden vehicles access.

“If they cannot get into the municipal dump, people dump their rubbish illegally, next to the road or in the veld. Approximately three years ago, we had a similar situation, and the land around the dump and the roads leading to the dump became impassable as a resource illegal dumping,” explained Mrs Mariaan Chamberlain, DA ward councillor for the area.

By closing the road, the land owner hopes to avoid a similar refuse-crisis.
